his is a bit of a catch up post of something special which happened earlier this year but before I know about MyClothesFreeLife.
The film Summer With Carmen is an indie Greek film (subtitled and in English) about two gay friends who meet up on a nudist beach to discuss their lives, loves and problems of fitting unconventional lives into conservative families and society. Carmen is a pet rescue dog who provides much fun and laughter in the film.
One of the friends is an actor who keeps losing jobs for acting ‘too gay’ so decides to write a screenplay about their lives (which turns out to be the film you’re watching). The other friend aids and supports him.
It’s a low budget film which is beautifully and sumptuously shot (mostly outdoors) in Athens and the local gay naturist beach of Limanákia. Director Zacharias Mavroidís co-wrote the film and described it as “a comedy about the futility of knowing thyself”. He mentioned Charlie Kaufman as an inspiration for the film’s structure.
This wonderfully bright, frothy, funny and sexy summer film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2023 and has since received very good reviews across Europe. The official British theatre release was in February of this year.
London’s Stoke Newingham Rio Cinema showed the film in March for a week and on it’s opening night they hosted a special screening whereby the audience, including me, were invited to watch the film clothes free.
The film was introduced by Zacharias in person and afterwards he was joined by lead actor Yorgos Tsiantoulas for a Q&A session – they remained clothed which felt a bit odd as we just watched Yorgos spend the past 90 minutes naked!
It was an incredibly fitting way to watch what is a brilliant, funny and moving movie. If you get the chance do see it.

Has anyone else had the pleasure of watching a naturist film in a public cinema whilst naked?
