The Post-Streaming Playbook: Key Signals from the Latest Big 3 Earnings Calls

The most recent quarterly earnings calls from Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Group confirm what we've been tracking on Liner Notes: passive streaming has hit a structural wall, and the industry is shifting toward intentionality, superfan monetization, and interactive formats. Below is a breakdown of four critical data points from the latest Q2 2026 calls, what they signal for the music market, and where to dive deeper for more on each trend: The Big 3’s latest earnings...

Presence Isn't Passive

There's a version of the maker's mindset that treats being lost in time as a kind of higher state. The idea that the most 'alive' people are the ones whose minds are always elsewhere, pulled between what they remember and what they're building toward. Simply being here now is viewed as passive, or even a little sad. This gets the mechanics of making backwards. It's true that the best things people build are usually assembled from a combination of memory and desire. A builder draws on everything ...

The New High Agency Triangle

George Mack’s popularization of the High Agency Triangle sparked a lot of great takes on what it means to push through reality. Most focus heavily on execution, but execution in a vacuum breaks down fast. High agency isn't just about forcing outcomes -- it’s an equilibrium of three distinct capacities: Lose any single corner, and the system collapses into noise, overthinking, or missed signal. Here's my visual framework for keeping them balanced.

Ternus Heading Apple Is Good for XR

John Ternus taking the helm at Apple might be the most significant pivot for XR in a decade. My POV on why a 1990s VR pioneer is exactly the disciplined skeptic the Vision Pro needs to thrive. 👇 John's an early 90s VR engineer turned skeptic. He views Vision Pro through a lens of profitability and focus (similar to the canceled Car project). This isn't a lack of vision, but a rare 30-year view on the medium that allows him to filter hype from commercial reality.

Ronan Farrow's OpenAI Investigation

Ronan Farrow’s investigation into OpenAI is a watershed moment for accountability in AI. It confirms a structural reality: the gap between OpenAI’s nonprofit safety rhetoric and its profit-chasing behavior isn't an accident. It's a feature of the leadership. OpenAI was founded on the premise that AGI (humanity’s most consequential invention) required a leader of “uncommon integrity.”

Transitioning to a Sacred Culture

I've been fascinated with the transition from a Profane culture to a Sacred one for a long time. In 2008 (senior year in college), my final project for the course Religion in Culture was a video essay on the mashup artist Girl Talk. I analyzed his live shows through the lens of sociologists like Emile Durkheim and Victor Turner, and the concepts of Collective Effervescence and Communitas.

The Great Sorting in Silicon Valley

The moral reckoning that came for the structural rot in Hollywood, Music, and Politics has finally triggered the Great Sorting in Silicon Valley. The era of Extractive Performance is expiring: vanity signals (TechCrunch, billboards, sauna invites), 'growth at any human cost', the 'move fast and break things' excuse for moral bankruptcy. It's all done. Builder, Rabbit, Humane, Pickle, Delve, others. These aren't accidents or outliers; they're symptoms of a paradigm where VCs monetize Credentialin...

Building an Organizational Collective Consciousness

This reads to me as the building of an organizational collective consciousness. The AI world model + intelligence layer reduces unnecessary friction that allows humans to focus on human things. This effectively collapses the hierarchy into 3 roles: owners, doers, and coaches. Jack gives historical examples of armies and organizations in industrial times. These are examples of efficiency and control in large, worldly systems.

Why the VR Piracy Ban Doesn't Change the Ecosystem

The recent shutdown of VRPirates has generated significant industry noise. But history suggests this is a temporary, cosmetic victory rather than a structural shift. The Hydra Effect of Platform Piracy Shutting down a centralized hub rarely delivers a lasting blow to distribution. We’ve seen this movie before with Napster, The Pirate Bay, Megaupload, etc. Academic studies covering game, music, and film distribution confirm this pattern: single-site blocks create temporary dips, immediately follo...

The End of the Infinite Buffet

Here’s what the 2026 IFPI Report reveals about the shift from passive access to embodied presence. The music industry spent the last decade relentlessly optimizing for passive attention. It turned music into background noise, created fundamentally broken streaming economics, and starved fans of true connection. If you want to see exactly how urgently legacy institutions are pivoting away from this broken model, check out the newly-released IFPI Global Music Report 2026. The major labels are publ...
