Soul Injector Commando makes you turn billionaires into humans
Hello friends! We are well and truly in the thick of it now, with the latest Fire Emblem dropping to critical acclaim across the board. The first Onimusha game in 20 years continues Capcom's hot streak. The next six weeks or so will be drop a cavalcade of highly anticipated games just in time for the end of the year, and somewhere in the middle of it all, a bunch of indies will be floating out there waiting for you to discover them. I am getting ready for an international trip back to Australia,...

Combolands delivers strategic depth in 30 minutes or less
Citybuilder fans are feasting right now. After what felt like an endless drought after the demise of 2013’s SimCity, these past few years we are seeing a lot of interesting indie takes that bring the sauce. Timberborn is a take where you are tiny Beavers building the best water-powered city you can muster. Against the Storm is the answer to “what if it was a Roguelike Citybuilder that kinda looked a lot like Warcraft”, bringing a lot of interesting choices to the table. Dorf Romantik is a beauti...

Shroom and Groom brings deckbuilders to First-Person dungeon crawlers
Happy Friday friends! This week I have been rather busy getting ready for a family trip back to Australia in a few weeks, along with my son’s upcoming 2nd birthday. Time flies, and there never seems to be enough of it. But I did manage to play some games this week, and I even got a review out for one of them which is linked below. Patrick has been banging on about how much he has been enjoying The Blood of Dawnwalker, which inspired me to finally check out 2018’s Vampyr. Released to limited crit...

Blood Dungeon shows that Bullet Heaven can be active
There are few indies out there that command my attention, no questions asked. Messhof won my heart with their 1v1 fencing masterpiece Nidhogg, and since then they have been dropping certified bangers. Flywrench was an absolute joy to control, commanding you to just lock in with the type of precision that is a perfect combo of highly rewarding and insufferably frustrating. Wheel World was a huge departure for the studio, delivering a 3D semi-open world game that fused their sensibilities with the...

A matter of pace
I’ve been playing a lot of well-paced games lately, and as I sit here reviewing internal builds of the game I am working on, pacing has been at the forefront of my criticisms lately. I wanted to chat to Blue about why pacing in games needs to be better. Steve:  This week I rolled credits on The Drifter, a pulpy adventure game modelled after the LucasArts greats with amazing voice acting and an interesting mystery to verb your way through. From the very first hour I was mesmerised by the game, wh...

Dice Gambit Review: Deep Systems and Glittering Style
Written by hosomeowa I first reviewed the indie heartthrob Dice Gambit as a potential entry for this summer’s BitSummit, a games festival in lovely, iconic, sweat-dripping-between-your-cheeks Kyoto. Unsurprisingly, _Gambit _earned a spot on the floor. Also unsurprisingly, unless I’m mistaken, the Malmö-based devs preferred _not _to sweat their faces off this year. I did still hover around their station like a lovestruck moth, because I so desperately wanted to snare one of their unfortunate soul...

Where is the hype on the eve of the Switch 2?
Welcome back to our new “Conversation” series! I sat here on the eve of the Nintendo Switch 2 launch, wondering... where is all the hype? Steve : Here we are, mere days from the arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2, and I can't help but feel that something is just... missing from this console launch. What should be a momentous moment for those of us plugged into the games machine, feels a little more like the blip of a new iPhone release. Nothing truly revolutionary, only a slight evolution. There a...

How does the Switch 2 fit into the landscape in 2025?
Welcome back to our new “Conversation” series! This time Blue and I talk about the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 that happened last week, and wonder where it fits in the current landscape of gaming. How will it compare to the revolution that the original Switch ushered in? Do you need to rush out and fight for a pre-order slot on day one? Steve:  After what feels like a lifetime of leaks and fervor around the proposed successor to Nintendo's handheld phenomenon, this week we finally were grace...
