The Pause: Let’s define that one filler dialogue choice format
"How are you feeling? You took a nasty fall back there." 1. Not great. 2. Ow! My head! 3. Where am I? Seen one of those? That's The Pause. A narrative design verb that's usually bad that I've been forced to acknowledge can have value.

I asked Claude to find the slowest test file again after my success [earlier today](/speeding-up-willow-camp-s-post_test-rb-by-99) and Claude found a call to BCrypt in my fixtures that was gobbling up time.

Speeding Up willow.camp's post_test.rb by 99%
I just asked Claude to speed up the slowest test file in willow.camp. post_test.rb was taking over 1 second to execute. For a tiny Ruby app, that's a long time.

Introducing willow.camp
willow.camp started because I wanted a platform that felt like me. I wanted a simple editing interface, the ability to import and export every post in markdown, and a pared-down reading interface.

Default, Dynamic Slot Content in Rails ViewComponents
Ever wished your ViewComponent slots could have dynamic defaults? In this post, I show how I built an Alert component that automatically picks the right icon for its type, but can easily swap in a spinner or any custom icon with a single line of code.

Filtering by Association Count in Complex Models in Rails
Filtering complex associations in Rails can get tricky: built-in methods like where.associated don’t always provide efficient results. Here’s how I used a SQL subquery inside Rails scopes to make a slow page fast again.
