I Love Sharing Cool Stuff Made By People
After cataloguing the computers I already own, I asked the fediverse to share things made with their human hands, and they delivered. On itch.io games and the free tools anyone can start creating with (Twine, Ink, Inform 7, Bitsy, Godot, GB Studio), my new digital-art habit on affordable hardware, NoAIlist and ScienceFind, and a /carless slash page. Plus Cloudflare killing Deno, Anthropic letting Claude rewrite Bun, Eltrac's Clojure Webmention receiver, the Golda fork of Hugo stripped of LLM code, ApricotBB forums, a call to invest in small Bubblers, and a tiny atlas of free things.

Kagi Kills Orion Browser for Linux and Windows
PALO ALTO, Calif. — Building a non-Chromium web browser in an era dominated by Google is already hard. Trying to do it on a shoestring budget across macOS, iOS, Linux, and Windows with a team of five developers is practically impossible. Kagi, the privacy-focused search engine company, is finally admitting defeat on its cross-platform ambitions, […]

SimurgArray going public: what it takes, and a calendar
Part 4 of 5. Right now SimurgArray lives in a private repository on my own Git server. It has a license, a changelog, a user guide, wheels, a Docker image and a version number that just became 2.0.0. In other words, it looks public. It is not, yet. Publishing code is easy. Publishing it responsibly...

SimurgArray: What good could it do?
Part 3 of 5. "Benefit to humanity" is a big phrase for a tool that mostly reads binary files. I will try to keep this post the right size. SimurgArray will not cure anything. What it can do is lower a few barriers that currently decide who gets to do genetics research and how much...

Are there SimurgArray alternatives? Yes. Why build it anyway?
Part 2 of 5. Whenever someone tells me they are writing their own genotype caller, my first instinct is to ask whether they have looked around. So it is only fair that I answer the same question about myself. I did look around. There is a lot of good work out there. Some of it...

Why SimurgArray should exist?
Part 1 of 5. Every genotyping array tells a small story before it tells you anything about DNA. A glass slide goes into a scanner, the scanner writes two IDAT files per sample (one red, one green), and a few hundred thousand bead intensities wait for someone to turn them into genotypes. That someone is...

Kindness as First-class Citizen in Programming
The world needs more intentional kindness. There's a manufactured backlash against empathy from Elon Musk to Gad Saad's 'suicidal empathy.' Kindness already operates as a design constraint: the IndieWeb's eleventh principle, Elm's code of conduct, Recurse Center's social rules, Ubuntu's 'I am because we are,' Audre Lorde's anger as care, and Coraline Ada Ehmke's Contributor Covenant. We must reclaim Ruby's MINASWAN culture from the Rails era, and I announce LearnWebDev.fyi, my restoration of Flatiron's retired Learn.co curriculum with 1,672 free lessons.

Island in the Net
·
Sep 16, 2026
Twenty+ Years
Twenty-five years ago, Khürt Williams launched his first web presence from a Linux server in his basement, running a small consulting business called Williams Interactive, Inc. on residential broadband. What began as a slow, self-hosted site on williamsinteractive.com became a lasting foundation in web publishing, open-source tools, and self-hosting — a small island in the net still running today.

There is so much to love and celebrate. Reclaim joy. Be open. Forgive.
Taking stock of myself and the world, I reflect on the overwhelming joy of being alive on this Pale Blue Dot—from the billions keeping civilization running to the unpaid volunteers maintaining curl and OpenSSL—and argue that reclaiming joy is an act of resistance against systems built on scarcity and fear. People are inherently good, and there is always room for grace.

rarelens: building a rare-disease variant triage platform, and the four things I got wrong
An end-to-end rare-disease variant triage platform: a Nextflow pipeline, three execution backends behind one API call, Terraform for two cloud tracks, and a phenotype-driven ranking measured against 10,178 published cases. Including the model metric that collapsed to exactly random once I removed the feature doing all the work.
