DRM-Free Ebook Sources
I read a blog post on Schemescape titled Using the Xteink X4, a minimalist e-reader. I have one, and I will have everyone know that I ordered mine in fall 2025 after reading about it in Liliputing before it apparently became an online "thing." But that aside, the Schemescape post, in noting that the X4...

The VCR’s Last Stand
It’s pretty much the answer to a trivia question at this point, but there was once a version of VHS that looked better than DVDs. Really.

The New DVD Bargain Bin
A major studio is apparently treating YouTube as a place to drop some of its archive films that have lost their cinematic luster. My mind is admittedly blown.

California Nearly Killed HBO
The surprisingly true story of how the state that has arguably benefited the most from the pay-TV industry … once voted to ban it. Blame an effective slogan.

DRM Is Toxic To Culture
The problem with technology-enforced restrictions isn’t that they allow legitimate enforcement of rights; it’s the collateral damage they cause in the process. In my personal opinion the problems are (very concisely) that they:quantise and prejudge discretion, reduce “fair use” to “historic use”,empower a hierarchical agent to remain in the control loop, andcondemn content to become inaccessible.

Let’s Lock Information Down
DRM, one of the internet’s dark arts, was already in the works—complete with epic patents—years before the existence of Napster gave it a business case.

The future of publishing
Thanks to everyone who came to Intersection: Publishing yesterday. Our fascinating round-table discussion was cut off far too soon: I think we could have gone on for days and only barely covered the issues. It’s clear that an open conversation that treated publishers, authors, readers, technologists and lawyers as equals was long overdue. (Missed it? Watch this space.) I thought I’d write down some of my takeaways while they’re fresh in my mind: DRM is misunderstood from both sides. From some

DRM and Friends
This one’s been kicking around in my head for a while, and maybe you can all help me understand it. With any contemporary social networking site, I can control who has access to the things I share, and I can update or change or revoke the relationships that enable that access at any time. For…

Mainstream Media is Really Hard
In his post this weekend, Rex Sorgatz points out that “mainstream media is hard”. It’s a truth I know firsthand — I used to work both in the music industry and at a newspaper, and still get the chance to work directly with the people at the largest media companies in the world who are bringing them…

Metadata
So, now that all the non-DRMed songs from the iTunes store will have your name embedded in them after download, how long until every illegally downloaded song’s ID3 tags have “mbainwol@riaa.org” in the metadata?

the public domain
The beautiful thing about Cory’s speech being in the public domain isn’t merely that I could make an HTML version called Cory Doctorow: Microsoft Research DRM talk, or that Matt could clean it up, or that Jason could read it aloud, it’s the far larger and more important artistic potential. In 50…

XP Media Center as Tivo data source
The Times has a pretty good write-up of Microsoft’s XP Media Center OS that’s coming out. I’ve seen some demos, and it is pretty impressive, especially since they loosened some of the DRM restrictions. But one of the most interesting parts to me was that the television listings are downloaded…
