Fast Decisions, Faster Builds, and CSS Fossils
This week speeds up the developer loop from Rust tooling and preview servers to CI and browser agents, while Jev asks whether many agent decisions need text generation at all. There is also a formal Skia optimizer, a sharp WCAG 3 critique, and some glorious old CSS nonsense.

JPEG XL Doubts, Half-Past Fetch, and Tiny GPU Lexers
This week questions JPEG XL's fit for the Web, looks past `await fetch()` into the still-streaming response, and finds a tiny model highlighting code on the GPU. Plus new HTML experiments, local accessibility checks, Interop 2027 proposals, native secret storage, and local-LLM break-even maths.

Day one at Pantheon: good docs, good company
Today is my first day as a Technical Writer at Pantheon. On August 17, I published a list of the roles I wanted next. Technical writing and documentation were right there. I wanted work that helps people understand software, solve problems, and get back to building. Four weeks later, here we are. Apparently, sometimes the...

This week explores inbox-free email verification and native spell-check dictionaries, compares browser editor and main-thread tradeoffs, and collects direct-DOM runtimes, a broader Remix, Rust-powered pnpm, and cheaper agent routing.

Soundprints, Syntax Highlighting, and 56k RuneScape
This week follows browser fingerprinting and Manifest V2's final Web Store exit, rethinks syntax highlighting and flex layout with newer CSS APIs, studies ruthless RuneScape networking, and collects small tools for configs, LLM routing, specifications, and tests.

Less JavaScript, Native React, and Terminal Everything
This week trims JavaScript with Baseline, takes React into GTK and the DOM into terminals, adds practical accessibility resources, connects compression to prediction, and includes four of my experiments around WASM SSR, generated MCP applications, YouTrack, and durable agent reports.

Is Islam Compatible with Western Civilisation?
When someone declares that Islam is "incompatible with Western civilisation," why is the West automatically treated as the moral standard? Before you judge whether Islam fits your "Western" world, you must first prove that your world is morally defensible.

200 Milliseconds, Correct Merges, and Franken-Domains
An HTTP request becomes a 200-millisecond interactive journey, while Ink & Switch shows why CRDT convergence does not guarantee valid data and Playwright turns long-lived SPA memory leaks into nightly tests. The tooling side spans proof-oriented F*, OCaml UIs, React over X11, compile-time CSS, progressive Web Components, a no-VDOM React successor, and a visualization language designed for agents. MobX and TanStack both get major cleanups, privacy law gets a practical home at noyb, and the strange-web section brings stitched-together domains, stolen buttons, collectible real cats, and local image dithering.

ScriptC, AI Guardrails, and Looking Beyond React
ScriptC makes a compelling case for compiling the static part of TypeScript into fast, small native programs with an explicit escape hatch for dynamic code. js13kGames starts in two weeks, while A11Y.md and Boffin explore persistent, targeted constraints for better AI-generated code. On the security side, fake interview projects are now hiding malware across SVG files; and Stack Match plus Framework Benchmarks provide some useful evidence for looking beyond React before choosing a frontend stack.

TinyTSX, Firefox in WebAssembly, and a Little Jelly
TinyTSX brings restricted TypeScript and Hono to small native servers without a JavaScript engine, while Dependabot and Cloudflare ship practical safety and deployment improvements. Accessibility and IndieWeb articles argue for using the platform and owning your work, agent harnesses make engineering judgment recoverable, and the experimental side runs Firefox and a 27B model inside the browser—with tactile Web Components and strange clocks for balance.

Frontend & JS Digest — Week 29
TypeScript 7 finally ships its native speedup, Ant takes another from-scratch swing at the JavaScript runtime, and Safari gives agents a direct debugging bridge into WebKit. The practical engineering reads compare KMP with React Native and show how Medal made modernization reinforce product work, while Scanwayy, terminal-image, and Paper Shaders turn visual output into reusable tools. The fun half of the week belongs to a live satellite globe, GTA 2 in the browser, and a generative pattern playground.

Frontend & JS Digest — Week 28
TypeScript 7.0 RC keeps the tooling shift toward native speed moving, while Google ships privacy and knowledge-sharing infrastructure with ZKP libraries and OKF. The practical links are nicely varied too: local semantic search with Ternlight, frontend runtime graphs with Frond, native dialog commands in React, a durable performance workout, and a genomics primer for engineers.

Frontend & JS Digest — Week 27
This week splits nicely between agent infrastructure and web-platform oddities. Vercel eve tries to make production agents feel like a framework instead of a bag of plumbing, OpenKnowledge turns markdown into shared human/agent memory, and react-stinky shows how agent skills can be useful when they know when to stay quiet. On the frontend side, React Fragment refs remove some wrapper-element hacks, Deno moves web apps toward desktop bundles, Takumi renders JSX to images without Chromium, and Celestial uses LLMs plus static analysis to explore component design spaces. The weird web is represented well too: a CSS-only wiggly slider, a website encoded into favicon pixels, and a privacy page that reads your browser while explaining exactly what happened.

Frontend & JS Digest — Week 26
This week is all about modernizing old foundations and making agents more useful. Babel 8 and TypeScript 7 RC move core JS tooling forward, Wasp turns its spec into TypeScript, MDN gives agents current platform docs, and TanStack AI tries to make AI product plumbing feel typed and portable. The tools are wonderfully varied too: Nub for stock-Node ergonomics, zod-compiler for faster validation, QUERY for better read-only request semantics, cssQuake because CSS apparently needed Quake, and long reads on Kindle bytecode patching, React performance, shader light, and programmable-card UI.

Frontend & JS Digest — Week 25
Safari 27 beta and Grid Lanes bring more layout behavior into the platform, VoidZero joins Cloudflare, and React gets a foundation-shaped sustainability story. The tools this week are very practical: Rust-backed Markdown, serious diff rendering, document-app UI components, no/lo-JS pattern replacements, and geometry helpers. For the long reads, Jane Street makes the agent-era case for formal methods, while Ciechanowski reminds everyone what the web can do when explanation and interaction are designed together.
