Taking a walk outside almost always helps
It's amazing how much a walk outside can help me regain perspective, especially when I've been spending a little too much time on my computer. It doesn't have to be an autumnal forest - it can just be around the block. What I also find helps: sometimes purposely NOT taking my headphones (for listening to audiobooks and podcasts). This gives my brain space to do whatever it wants to. If I find myself spiralling into anxiety-churn, then I focus on concrete things around me. Sometimes giving myself...

Teen Sadness And Suicidal Thoughts Keep Falling, Even As Kids Keep Scrolling
Over the last few years, it has become accepted knowledge that the internet — mainly social media and, lately, AI tools — was damaging the mental health of kids and increasing the suicide rate among that demographic. To hear the media and politicians talk about it, this was the biggest issue on the planet and...

Late 30s going on 70
It finally feels like fall here, it was about 48F when I took the kids to school and daycare. Enjoyed getting dressed for that sort of weather, not so much sunscreen and sweat. And my ears don’t hurt in the wind anymore thanks to the hydroxychloroquine, turns out that was Raynaud’s. But the joint pain...

#oneaday Day 833: Things I miss
It is, I suspect, a natural part of growing older that you start to miss things that are no longer a regular part of your life. So I thought I might reflect on that a bit today. In what turned out to be rough chronological order: I miss my school days. While there are aspects...

'Would You Like to Reload a Previous Save?' (➤Yes / No)
Revisiting my maladaptive daydream of waking up at twelve years old with all my present knowledge intact, I weigh the seductive fantasy of correcting every regret—being a better brother to Byron, buying Bitcoin with birthday money—against everything that would be erased: 500,000 words, hard-won relationships, the album that got me through a specific winter. A meditation on the future self who would trade almost anything for one more ordinary day. The door is already halfway closed.

Unless you want OCD, stop seeking ideological purity.
A while back, Hank Green admitted to using AI, and was honest about how it had hurt his cognition. As a result, he was founded by anti-AI ideologues dogpiling him for having ever used it in the first place, particularly on Bluesky and Reddit, the latter where I saw someone justifying said harassment because it...

5 Wellbeing Trends That Make More Sense Through Jeremy Griffith’s Explanation of the Human Condition
The modern wellbeing movement can sometimes seem like an endless parade of new remedies: mindfulness, nature retreats, digital detoxes, community activities, purpose-driven living and countless ways to become healthier, calmer and more fulfilled. But beneath these trends is a fascinating question: why are we so desperate to find ways of feeling better in the first...

#oneaday Day 815: A second time around
I have four more days of work before we go on holiday for the second time this year. This may sound extravagant, but given that the first time around was during the period that Oliver went missing, I'm sure you won't judge us for wanting a "do-over". We had some money from anniversary gifts, so...

After exceeding my free Netlify bandwidth for the first time and wiring up a homelab to run this site, I reflect on how my life has narrowed around writing and code, the friendships that did not survive that focus, and the loneliness of a devotion without a clean resolution.

I'm Looking for Love
Responding to anonymous blogger Unstory's claim that love is a fake story and does not exist, I argue that love is a real, measurable, and physical fact of human connection. On fMRI studies of spouses, Harvard's 87-year Study of Adult Development, oxytocin and Queer chosen family, and the courage it takes to keep looking for love anyway.

In Defence of Vent Posting
Drawing on my decade of experience as a 7cups Listener and research on emotional sharing, I argue in defense of vent posting. Venting is a natural human need for connection and validation, not a character flaw. Community support and empathy are essential medicine, and we should meet people where they are rather than moralizing their coping mechanisms.
