Mestra
The library texted me that one of my requested holds was in for pickup: Mestra by Madeline Miller. It’s a little smaller than I expected! 😂 I finished it in a single pomodoro. It’s a first-person retelling of the Mestra myth. Speaking as a daughter trying to help care for an aging father, it’s a real […]

Interview on Civility Unbound
The idea of civility goes back to classical Rome and the ways in which citizens engaged one another within the republic. The term itself is often used in a number of different ways, reflecting expected behavior, particularly in public spaces, and as a mechanism to manage human interaction. But civility and the use of this...

End Times Fascism
A scathing investigation into the apocalyptic thinking of the Christian nationalists, tech-bro reactionaries, and populist survivalists who increasingly define the contemporary right—and a recipe for how to fight them. As the planet burns and shared reality melts, a new iteration of the far right is on the march. How can we understand this dangerous new development, and what resources can we draw on to resist it? In their scathing assessment of the contemporary scene, the celebrated activists and authors Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor explore how the religious fundamentalists, Silicon Valley technologists, and ethno-nationalists who make up this apocalyptic alliance share more than one might think: they are united in their belief that some kind of cleansing cataclysm is coming, whether through the manifestation of messianic prophecy, the rampages of a resource- and job-consuming artificial intelligence, or the purported existential threat of immigration and cultural replacement. Rather than avoiding this conflagration, they welcome it, convinced they will be among the saved on the other side. “End Times Fascism” is the ideology of the actors who strive to make the world unlivable and then seek to protect themselves from the fallout—whether by repairing to luxurious private islands, rocketing off to Mars, or bunkering the nation to keep their enemies at bay. The new survivalists have accumulated power, but they are far from impregnable. As Klein and Taylor show via original reporting and analysis, their many internal conflicts and contradictions and their nihilistic inability to envision a shared future, even for their ostensible allies, leave them vulnerable to a new kind of “pro-life” politics—rooted in reverence for our shared existence and regard for the earth we inhabit and must protect.

Sfogo: Bonelli ti odio

I need a literary chaser.
I finished the Errol Flynn biography I was reading. It’s an excellently researched book, but damn. As I wrote on Goodreads: An excellent biography that confirmed to me that Flynn was Not a Nice Man. Like, I was expecting him to be a raconteur, a playboy, maybe someone a bit naughty. “In like Flynn!” chortle […]

Writing is how I do philosophy. I went …
Writing is how I do philosophy. I went into Waterstones on Gower st in London intending to find a book about writing. The shop itself was superb—the kind of place a bookshop should be—and I wandered through the writing shelves waiting for something to reach out and demand a place in my collection. A few...

Clearing out the browser tabs… Rare Moomin mug sells for €46k – Holy moly. Thankfully none of ours are especially rare or valuable, or I’d feel scared to use them. Sagrada Família LEGO – Twelve thousand pieces! I was prepared to scoff until I saw that they’ve reproduced the interior too, complete with the stained […]

2d6 Things About Waste Flowers by Bryn Hammond
I don't plan on doing anything like full-fledged reviews on this blog, but sometimes I'm going to roll two dice and tell you that many things about something I enjoyed reading, playing, or watching. To start off the series, here are some thoughts on Waste Flowers, a novella by Bryn Hammond. Number Rolled: 8

Oh no.
Not content to eff up Roald Dahl books, it seems Netflix’s approach to C.S. Lewis will be less than faithful too. Do I trust Greta Gerwig enough to still pay to see this? It was one of my favourite books. (Why does Jadis look like an alien go-go dancer?!)

Gluppit the prawling strangles!
Every year we see the heritage buses go by and hear the steam strains and feel sad that we missed out. But not this year! Just booked tickets to a couple events at the Sydney Transport Heritage Expo, including a cruise on a real 19th century barque! I’ll have to get back to my circumnavigation […]

We need a new Carnegie!
Last night was the annual David Scott Mitchell Oration at the State Library, which was delivered by Richard Ovenden OBE, Bodley’s Librarian at Oxford University. His topic was the library as a “radical idea,” and the place was absolutely packed. I saw him present last year when he visited Sydney Uni and I found it […]

NSW History Awards 2026
Last night was the annual NSW History Awards at the State Library. The room was filled with historians and their supporters, and just like last year’s ceremony, I loved it despite not having read a single one of the shortlisted works. The vibe was set early on by Uncle Brendan Kerin’s Welcome to Country: “Two […]
