Making the naturist case for not dressing up on Halloween

This time of year especially in the United States, nudists and naturists participate in Halloween parties. The parties particularly if hosted by a club or venue can be an elaborate affair with food, music dancing and of course costumes and even costume contests. One thing that always seems odd is how much creativity and effort gets put into dressing up for a part attended mostly by nudists/naturists. So I’m making the naturist case for not dressing up on Halloween. Here are my thoughts on why naturists should bare down and not dress up for Halloween.

Social Nudity

The most relevant aspect of naturism whenever naturists gather is social nudity. For some these days is it the only relevant part of naturism. While I don’t agree with that view it is still important. While it makes sense to me for clothing optional situations to exist and be a guiding principle for some, it seems to me that major social naturist events should be nude. In the same way that most spaces require nudity in their pools, social nudity should be an expectation and prominent feature of naturist social events.

Why? Because it is the perfect way to introduce the reality that social nudity is simply about doing ordinary social activity without clothing. If you have never danced without clothes on you don’t know what you have been  missing. Furthermore, it a great opportunity to express the non sexual aspects of naturism. Dancing at clothed parties can sometimes turn into a kind of a sexual tease. Naturists can exhibit the practice of  managing the gaze, being respectful and having fun dancing without drifting into public sexualized behavior.  That shows how principled and not hedonistic we are counter the mainstream view that we are just pervs or swingers.

Naturist Creativity

Halloween parties that eschew dressing up for naturist themed costumes are also an opportunity for great creativity. The challenge for naturists is to take  your creativity to the next level and instead of coming up with ideas of what to wear be creative and not wear clothing as part of your costume.

Here are some ideas to spark your creativity.

Body Paint costumes are always a good choice though they take some planning and effort. Super heroes or cartoon characters that wear tight costumes are good body paint costume candidates. There are also nude superheroes like Dr Manhattan, and movie characters like Smurfs and the Navi from Avatar that you can cosplay using body paint for costumes.

You can also use body paint to express national patriotism, make a statement, show sports fan loyalty, special interest or your ancestral heritage. The possibilities really are limited only by your creativity.

If you don’t want to deal with body paint clean up or don’t think you are creative enough then go minimalist with just a masquerade ball type mask or other head/face covering. The popular Pumpkin head mask is another option. Adam and Eve before the so called fall is another great option along with items in nature like a tree, bush or animal as well as mythical or fantasy creatures of nature like a wood nymph or fairy.

Note – blackface using body paint or any costumes that depict a race or culture that is not your own is offensive,  nude or not and should be avoided like the plague. They do not reflect naturist values. That includes Native American headdresses or other indigenous ceremonial attire. Culture is not a costume.

Fun

Finally baring down instead of dressing to party is just a lot more fun. The only time I have dressed up for a naturist Halloween party was at the request of my date for the evening who want to go as a celebrity couple. Everyone thought it was a great costume though we arrived too late for the contest. But it was long before I was out of the costume and dancing clothes free to the music. The other times that I participated  in naturist Halloween parties with a date or solo the  costumes were bare it’s just more fun.
