White-breasted nuthatch

I love watching the nuthatches walk down the trunk head-first. #Birds #USBirds

ately I’ve been feeling birding ennui — birdwatching burnout. My once-thrilling hobby suddenly feels repetitive, stagnant, a chore. It tends to follow a period of intense chasing, a seasonal lull, or the sense that I’ve maxed out my local patches. To break it, I’ve forced myself out to Van Horne Park, Millstone Park, Lake Carnegie Dam and Billie Johnson Mountain Lakes Preserve. It hasn’t helped. I’m hoping the fall warbler migration brings some of the excitement back.

This photo was taken a few weeks ago. My home office desk faces a window looking straight into a sassafras tree, and birds land in it throughout the day. I love watching the nuthatches walk down the trunk head-first.
