What is the Fediverse, and why connect your own website to it? A photographer's perspective on a more open and connected web.

In the previous article, I wrote about where photographs can live.
There are the major platforms such as Instagram and X, but there is also another option: the Fediverse.
So, what exactly is the Fediverse?
Some people may have heard the name and simply think of Mastodon.
Others may see it as a new kind of social media platform, something that could replace Instagram or X.
But it is a little different.
The Fediverse is not the name of a single social network.
Fediverse
What Is the Fediverse?
Fediverse
The word “Fediverse” is generally understood to be a combination of “federation” and “universe.”
Simply put, it is a network where independent services and servers can connect with one another through shared protocols and standards.
That may sound a little technical at first.
It might be easier to understand if we think about it through photography.
Imagine, for a moment, that there was only one place in the world where photographs could be exhibited.
Every photographer in the world would have to bring their work to that one gallery.
Which photographs get displayed.
Which photographs get noticed.
Which photographers get seen by more people.
All of those decisions would ultimately be made by that one place.
And if the gallery changed its policies, photographers would have no choice but to adapt.
But that is not how the real world works.
There isn’t just one gallery.
There are different galleries in different places. There are bookstores that carry photobooks, and places that exhibit and sell Zines.
Photographers can choose the places that suit their work.
And when photographers and audiences move between these different places, something larger begins to emerge: a broader photographic culture.
The Fediverse is somewhat similar.
The internet does not have to be one enormous service gathering everyone into the same place.
Different places can remain independent while still being connected to one another.
One of the open protocols that makes this possible is ActivityPub.
ActivityPub defines how servers can communicate and exchange information with one another.
And a network where independent services and servers can connect through such shared protocols is what we call the Fediverse.
You Can Talk to People in Different Places
Outlook
Fediverse
The easiest way for me to explain the idea of the Fediverse is to compare it to email.
Imagine someone using Gmail.
Even if the person they’re talking to uses Yahoo Mail, they can still send them an email.
Using Gmail doesn’t mean you can only communicate with other Gmail users.
You can also exchange messages with someone using Outlook.
They are using different services, but they can communicate because they share a common system: email.
The Fediverse is somewhat similar.
People can be in completely different services or places and still connect through a shared protocol.
Of course, email and the Fediverse do not work in exactly the same way.
But the underlying idea is important:
You don’t communicate because you use the same service. You communicate because you are connected through a shared system.
I think this is one of the most important ideas to understand when thinking about the Fediverse.

Different Places, One Connected Network
Fediverse
Pixelfed
So, what kinds of places are actually connected?
There are many different services within the Fediverse.
For example, Mastodon is known as a social network centered around short-form posts.
Pixelfed is a platform focused on photography.
Misskey is made up of different servers, each with its own culture and features.
For video, there is PeerTube.
For community-based discussion, there is Lemmy.
And websites can also become part of this network.
By adding ActivityPub to WordPress, a WordPress website can connect to the Fediverse as well.
In other words, there is no single way to join the Fediverse.
You don’t have to use WordPress.
If photography is your focus, there is Pixelfed.
If publishing and writing are your focus, you can use a website that connects to the Fediverse.
You can also use a social network such as Mastodon.
Each of these places has its own purpose and culture, but they can still connect with one another through shared protocols.
Thinking About Where We “Post” Photographs
Now, let’s think about photography again.
For example, you take a photograph and post it to Instagram.
There are already a huge number of people there, along with systems designed to help your photographs be seen.
That convenience is valuable.
But within the Fediverse, the place where you keep your photographs and the place where people see them don’t necessarily have to be the same.
Someone using Mastodon can follow a photographer on Pixelfed.
They can also follow the photographer’s own website.
When a new article or photograph is published on that website, it can appear through the Fediverse client they already use.
The place where you keep your photographs and the place where people discover them don’t have to be limited to the same service.
For photographers, I think that is a surprisingly significant change.
Moving to Another Place Without Losing Your Connections
Another interesting aspect of the Fediverse is the ability to change where you are active.
Imagine that the server or service you are currently using no longer feels right for you.
For a photographer, it would be something like moving your base of activity from one gallery to another.
Of course, moving a photograph from one gallery to another isn’t as simple as just taking it off the wall and carrying everything over.
The same is true of the Fediverse. You cannot necessarily move every post and every piece of data exactly as it is.
However, some services connected to the Fediverse have mechanisms that allow you to move your base of activity while maintaining some of the connections you have built.
For example, on Mastodon, when you move your account to another server, your existing followers can be automatically directed to your new account, provided the relevant software supports the migration.
At the same time, your posts and media do not simply move with you. The accounts you follow, as well as blocks and mutes, also need to be exported and imported separately.
In other words,
“Once you create an account here, you can never leave.”
That is not necessarily how it has to work.
Not everything can be transferred perfectly, but you can move your base of activity to a place that suits you while keeping at least some of the connections you have built along the way.
For example, imagine if X and Instagram were connected through ActivityPub.
You could move your base of activity from X to Instagram while maintaining the connections—the followers—you had built over years on X.
Leaving X would not necessarily mean losing everything you had built there.
Of course, in reality, the extent to which an account can be moved and what can be carried over depends on each service and the mechanisms it supports.
Even so, you don’t have to completely tie your activity to a single service. You can choose where you want to be based while keeping your connections.
I think this is another feature that becomes possible because the network is open.
The Fediverse Is Not Everything—At Least Not Yet
Instagram、YouTube、X
Fediverse
Fediverse
By this point, you might get the impression that the Fediverse is meant to replace today’s social networks.
But that isn’t the case, at least not right now.
Large platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and X still have an overwhelming number of users.
If your goal is simply to reach as many people as possible with your photographs, they remain extremely powerful places to be.
Moving to the Fediverse doesn’t solve everything.
In fact, perhaps the idea of “replacing existing social media with the Fediverse” misses the point.
The Fediverse is moving in a different direction.
Its evolution can sometimes seem slow compared with the major social platforms.
That’s because it isn’t a system where a single company can decide, “We’re adding this feature tomorrow,” and roll it out to users around the world all at once.
Different companies, developers, server administrators, and communities are building it little by little, each in their own places.
Because of that, it can sometimes feel like a slower or more complicated process.
But that slowness is also a reflection of the fact that no single company is deciding the future of the entire network.
It isn’t about moving as fast as one company can make decisions.
It is about many different places evolving in their own ways, while the network as a whole gradually changes.
That is what I find interesting about it.
Where Does It Go From Here?
In reality, the movement around the Fediverse is gradually expanding.
New services are emerging, while existing services continue to add support for ActivityPub.
And there is another development that I find particularly interesting.
There are also efforts to welcome journalists and media organizations into the Fediverse.
For example, Mastodon introduced a feature that connects article authors with their Fediverse accounts, allowing readers to discover and follow those authors when an article is shared. The Verge, MacStories, and MacRumors were among the early examples highlighted by Mastodon.
Mastodon’s technical direction in 2026 also acknowledges that journalists and public institutions are looking for alternatives to the major platforms, and outlines plans to strengthen features for these kinds of users.
I think this has something in common with photographers.
Just as photographers are beginning to think beyond simply leaving their work on social media, and are building places they can manage themselves—personal websites, photobooks, and Zines—journalists also face the question of where they want to place and control their own work.
The same kind of movement is already taking place in the EU.
In 2022, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) launched pilot projects called “EU Voice,” based on Mastodon, and “EU Video,” based on PeerTube. The projects allowed EU institutions and organizations to create accounts and connect with users on the Fediverse. The pilots ran until 2024, and the EDPS later described the results as a successful initiative.
It will be interesting to see how far these developments go.
How much will the Fediverse grow?
How will it coexist with the existing social platforms?
And how will the environment for people who publish photographs, journalism, and other forms of work and information on the internet change?
These are things I want to continue following.
But I don’t think I need to explain all of that here.
If the time comes to write about the future of the Fediverse itself, I’ll come back to it then.
That’s Why Websites Can Be Connected Too
Now, let’s come back to Dystronix.
I wanted to create my own website as a place to keep my photography.
I wanted to have my own domain, design it myself, choose the photographs myself, and write my own words.
I want it to hold not only the photographs I take, but also my thoughts about photography and the internet.
That is why I chose WordPress.
And by using the ActivityPub plugin, I can connect the website itself to the Fediverse.
There is also another service with a similar approach to what I am doing: Ghost.
In 2025, Ghost released its ActivityPub-powered Social Web feature as a public beta, continuing its efforts to connect Ghost publications to the Fediverse.
In other words, you don’t have to use WordPress.
What matters is not which service you choose, but whether you can have a place of your own without closing that place off from the rest of the network.
That is what matters to me.
Why Is Dystronix Connected to the Fediverse?
「Mastodon
Dystronix
So, the reason Dystronix is connected to the Fediverse is not simply because
“I use WordPress.”
Nor is it because
“I like Mastodon.”
I didn’t choose the Fediverse because it is bigger than today’s social media.
And I don’t believe it will replace everything.
What mattered to me was this:
Having a place of my own.
And,
being able to connect that place to the rest of the world.
I found the Fediverse compelling because it makes it possible to have both at the same time.
I can choose where I take photographs.
I can choose where I exhibit them.
And I can choose what that place connects to.
In the future, new services may emerge within the Fediverse.
There may be entirely new ways of sharing photographs.
That is why I think there is value not simply in choosing a particular service, but in the underlying ability to connect across different services.
Dystronix is only one small place within that network.
But it is my own place, while also remaining connected to the world outside it.
Have your own place, but don’t close it off.
That is why this site is connected to the Fediverse.
