Violinist and composer Jason Kao Hwang teams up with bassist Ken Filiano and multiple percussionist Andrew Drury for a collection of four spontaneous sounding tunes. Filiano introduces and swings through a wild “Galaxies Twist Under Before It”, featuring Drury’s drums, while Hwang scratches out “Ricochet” around some percussion discussion on the appropriately titled “Ricochet”. Mournful strings go deep on “What To Keep…” and strings scratch a percussive itch on “Second Life”. Lazarus, come forth!
Best known for her work on Joe Lovano’s classic Rush Hour, vocalist and percussionist Judi Silvano goes outside and in with Haruna Fukazawa/fl and Claire de Brunner/bassoon on a collection of free form originals. Silvano’s range is inspiring and effortless, and she uses it to wild and abstract directions as on “Coming Together” and the gymnastic “Flock Of Three”. De Brunner gets the spotlight on “Passing Through” and is a foil for the leader on “Gathering”, wihle Fukazawa ridges the groove on a fun “Beaverbrook”. Icarus-like in inspiration.
Famed and prodigious pianist/composer Satoko Fujii leads a large ensemble of reeds, rhythm, brass and synth on this five part “Second Attempt” suite. Things open up with a space landing gear effect on “Part 1”, while the horns scramble around the drums on “Part 2”. Brass tweets and blurps in askance directions on “Part 4” with moans and groans on the closing “Part 5” One more try?
